Nervous Waters - Pirá - Argentina

For many years, one of Latin America’s most exciting game fish was kept a secret in its heartland.Recently, the golden dorado, or ‘river tiger’ as it is affectionately known, has rocketed to the top of the hot fish list. The dorado is caught in colored or murky waters and generally with heavy spinning tackle. Since the discovery of the Iberá Marshland and the establishment of Pira Lodge, clear water fishing on light spinning tackle and on fly rods has become one of the world’s most sought after angling adventures. Opened in March 2000, Pirá Lodge is the world’s first deluxe lodge to target the freshwater dorado. The lodge is located in the Iberá Marshland, one of the most unique and fascinating wetlands in the world. The incomparable variety of wildlife found in the marshland allows anglers to combine fishing with a number of other activities. However, it is the electric take and dazzling fight of the dorado that brings fishermen back year after year.

The lodge is located in beautiful virgin wilderness where you can find the freshwater Dorado. The Ibera Marshland is a vast system of crystal-clear creeks, flowing rivers, shallows and lakes. The lodge is located in the Correintes Province in the middle of the Ibera Marshland, and can be accessed by commercial airline from from the airport to the lodge by a four wheel drive vehicle takes about 4 hours. A 2 hour private charter flight is available from Buenos Aires to the lodge’s landing strip when operational or to the Mercedes airport; then a one and a half hour drive to the lodge.

Flamingo Cay is a small exclusive fishing and hunting resort nestled in a private secluded cove on the Westside of Andros Island. The Cay was acquired by the Bethell family in the 1920’s. Charles W. F. Bethell maintained the property for waterfowl shooting in the 1950’s and was host to The Duke of Windsor and other celebrities. Grandson Charles B. M. Bethell III restored the existing camp and has developed a first class and unique sporting destination for waterfowl and flats-fishing enthusiasts.

The Lodge is the only facility on the West coast of Andros Island and we have miles of flats for Bonefish all season. We fish for Tarpon and Permit in October/November and early December and then again in March/April and May. Guests fish from both 17′ and 18′ Hell’s Bay Boatworks’ skiffs.

Gil Drake and A.J. McClane, an avid angler, author, and editor of Field and Stream, set out exploring the Islands of the Bahamas. While searching for a private island with access to prime bonefishing flats, they came upon a small cay with big potential. Deep Water Cay soon became the destination of choice for people who shared the founders’ quest for sport and leisure activities, in a private Caribbean setting.

Fishing has always been an integral part of Bahamian life, and it is the foundation on which the venerable Deep Water Cay was created. The 2.2 square mile Deep Water Cay, lies on an east/west tack and is situated below an archipelago of moderate-sized cays arranged on a north/south tack. A series of channels connect the southern and northern fisheries, making DWC a close run to any of them. There is enough variety for everyone to fish.

The Bahamas are known for some of the best fishing in the world, and the island of Grand Bahama is no exception. North Riding Point Club has access to the best bonefishing flats on both the north and south shores of Grand Bahama. The north shore of Grand Bahama has the largest bonefish habitat, comprising several hundred square miles of flats, inlets, and mangrove-covered cays literally teeming with large, wild bonefish. It is not uncommon to see dozens, if not hundreds, of fish in a single day.

Grand Bahama is also the place to catch large bonefish – those trophy fish we all dream about – in excess of 10 pounds. Fish in the 10 – 12 pound range are fairly common. in March 2007 a record bonefih of 16 lbs was caught, one of our guests teetered on the brink of a new world record by landing a 15+ pound bonefish! We estimate the average size of landed bonefish to be around 5 – 6 pounds – somewhat larger than the average you will find on most other bonefish flats around the world.

NRPC has recently upgraded to Hell’s Bay skiffs powered by 90hp 4-stroke engines. Guides and guests alike are raving about the new boats! Guides typically pole anglers to get them on fish, but there are many opportunities to wade the flats, as well. The flats vary in nature; many exhibit a soft marl or mud bottom, while others support turtle grass, and still others consist of firm, white sand. In all, multiple species of shrimp, crabs, and other bonefish prey are plentiful.

The newly-constructed Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge is located on a beautiful Caribbean beach in the southernmost part of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, just south of the sleepy lobster fishing village of Punta Herrero and within the massive 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, established in 1986. This is a remote wilderness flat fishing destination.

Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge opened its inaugural season in April 2017, and will finally allow saltwater anglers easy access to the last frontier of Caribbean flats fishing – Espiritu Santo Bay. This fishery can provide fantastic action for all four of the Caribbean’s famous inshore species – permit, tarpon, bonefish, and snook. This is “Grand Slam” country!

La Bahia del Espiritu Santo (ESB) is the true gem of the Mexican Riviera, and perhaps the last remaining wilderness fly fishing outpost in the Mexican Yucatan. It has always been the “second sister” to its larger, more accessible sibling to the north, Ascension Bay. That’s all about to change. For the dedicated saltwater flats fly fisherman, Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge with a fleet of Hell’s Bay Watermans, provides the best angling opportunities in the entire Yucatan.
